Soft Volumes are used in Plasma to control and help with some very special things.

In order to use regions to control visibility, light, and sound, you will have to make those regions into Soft Volumes. This is done in Max with Cyan's plugin of course.

But before you run off to do this, if you've never heard of Soft Volumes, or don't understand them, I recommend reading the article that I'm linking to that is over on the GoW Wiki. It's very advanced, and pertains to mostly using Soft Volumes with Blender and the PyPRP plugin. However, it will still give you a good understanding of how Soft Volumes work.
