Backstory

The game begins as you stumble upon an intriguing book, called Myst. You (Who will now be referred to as "The Stranger," for simpler terms.) begin to read the fascinating book. It tells of an island world with such vivid detail, that you almost fell like your there. As the Stranger closes the book, he/she notices the front page glowing like a screen. The moving image, much like a video, shows the island world that was described in great detail in the book. Curious, the Stranger touches the page and begins the adventure of a lifetime. *link*

How to Navigate

Before we delve into the game, you must first understand how to navigate Myst. Since most ports of the game will have their own instruction manuals, this section will only cover the PC version of the game. Myst is a point-and-click adventure game, and as such, all gameplay is handled entirely by mouse clicks. Clicking the left mouse button in the center of the screen moves the perspective forward, while clicking the sides move up, down, left, and right respectively. There are also environment clickables such as books, pages, doors, buttons, or switches. To save your game on the PC version, click file/save game on the top bar. (Hidden until rolled over by the mouse or activated by ESC.) Now that you know the basics, let's get started.

Getting Started

Section under construction. The game begins with Atrus monologue describing his predicament of falling into the star fissure (Described in further detail in Riven and Myst: The Book of Atrus.) and the subsequent loss of his Myst linking book. The Stranger finds the book, touches the moving page, and is linked to Myst Island.

Your first arrival to Myst starts on an old dock onlooking a large set of gears, an odd looking switch, and a seagull in the sky. Start by moving forward. Once you round the dock and are in front of the first building, you will see a note on the ground. If you'd like a refresher on what it says here is a transcript:

Catherine,

I've left for you a message of utmost importance in our fore-chamber beside the dock. Enter the number of Marker Switches on this island into the imager to retrieve the message.

Yours,

Atrus

Know Your Ages

As you play Myst you will find several books that link to different ages. These ages provide essential clues to help you escape the island of Myst and find a way home. Here are the ages available to explore:

NOTE: If you are laying Myst on Nintendo DS, the bonus age from realMyst is also available.
